1. First – “Learn to admit fault” People often refuse to acknowledge their own mistakes, choosing instead to shift the blame onto others and insisting that they themselves are right. In truth, the inability to admit one’s own faults is, in itself, a major failing.
2. Second – “Learn to be gentle” Human teeth are very hard, while the tongue is very soft. Over the course of a lifetime, teeth may all fall out, yet the tongue remains intact. Therefore, one must learn to be flexible and gentle; such a disposition allows one to endure and thrive in the long run. A gentle heart represents a significant advancement in one’s personal cultivation.
3. Third – “Learn to practice forbearance” In this world, a little forbearance can calm the turbulent waters; taking a step back opens up a vast horizon. Forbearance can resolve a myriad of issues. It is a way of handling situations—a skill in diffusing conflict—using wisdom and capability to turn major problems into minor ones, and minor problems into nothing at all.
4. Fourth – “Learn to understand” A lack of mutual understanding breeds disputes, conflicts, and misconceptions. People should strive to understand and empathize with one another, offering mutual support. Without such empathy, how can there ever be peace?
5. Fifth – “Learn to let go” Life is like a suitcase: you pick it up when you need it, and you set it down when you no longer do. Refusing to set it down when the time is right is like dragging around a heavy load—it leaves one with no sense of ease or freedom. Our time in this life is limited; by admitting our faults, showing respect, and practicing tolerance, we earn the acceptance of others—and by learning to let go, we attain true inner freedom!
6. Sixth – “Learn to be moved” When we see the virtues in others, we should rejoice; when we witness the misfortunes of others, we should be moved with compassion. Deep resonance arises from those who possess a loving heart—a Bodhisattva spirit, a Bodhicitta (the aspiration for enlightenment).
7. Seventh – “Learn to Survive” To survive, we must maintain and protect a healthy body. A healthy body is not only beneficial to oneself but also brings peace of mind to one’s family and friends; thus, it is also an act of filial piety and respect toward those who love us.
